Opposition: Woldingham Cricket Club
Day & date: Sunday, 21 April 2019
Ground: picturesque Surrey ground, lush green outfield with high cut grass (slow outfield)
Weather: Sunny 24 degrees, warm and dry
Pitch: good covering of grass, slow and variable bounce
Our team: decent standard Sunday XI mostly second XI players plus a couple of first team members
Their team: not 11 to begin with but they managed to add a few first XI bowlers to make the numbers
Toss: Wimbledon CCC (elected to bat first)
Started strongly by Woldingham by some lively pace bowling on a wicket that really helped the first XI bowlers. WCCC were soon 1 down in the second over but Dhruva and Sai weathered the storm and batted through the testing conditions to allow the middle and lower order to plunder the bowling. The team ended with 181 from 40 overs with 71 not out for Nasrullah and 28 for Waqas – both knocks laced with some great strokes despite the disciplined bowling from the opposition.
Woldingham started poorly with a wicket in the first over and never really recovered losing wickets at regular intervals. Nasrullah turned in a superb all-round performance by picking up three wickets in addition to his aggressive knock in the first innings. Dhruva, Geoff and Theo all chipped in with useful wickets giving away very little by way of runs. WCCC wrapped up the innings in fading light by bowling Woldingham out for 70 off 30.2 overs – a comprehensive victory!
Highlights: Nasrullah’s allround performance (71* & 3-12), Geoff’s opening spell with 6 overs, 9 for 2 and Dhruva’s quick leg spinners yielding 2 wickets for 6 runsWCCC player of the match: Nasrullah Khan
Champagne moments: Overhead catch in the deep by Arvind
