3rd XI vs Abinger
A match played in conditions that can only reasonably be described using words that Mr Chairman wouldn’t allow me to use on the club website, so I shall very conservatively instead refer to them as ‘adverse’. It is also noteworthy that such a concept as WCCC 3rd XI has not existed in the best part of a decade, a compliment to the offseason recruitment campaign conducted by Geoff and Ben.

WCCC won the toss and elected to send Abinger in to bat first. The attack was opened by Brian (c) (0-38) and Theo (2-73), with David manning the gloves. Two early wickets were had by Theo, taking the bails of both opener Marcus Robertson for a duck, and skipper Paul Craggs for 8. All appeared to be going swimmingly, until the heavens opened, both literally and metaphorically, upon the Corinthians; as the 3/4 combination of Dylan Edwards (an imperious 132*) and Niel Phillips (63) set in for an inspired partnership of over 100, briefly interrupted by a rain enforced break. Although by the time the covers had been secured, the rain had abated, c’est la vie. Keith (vc) (1-34) managed to depose Phillips, and Geoff (1-23) quickly took the wicket of number 5 Will Hay (2). 6 Ed Bigland (49*) and Edwards continued the torrent of runs, taking Abinger to 281-4 dec. at tea.

Late overs were also had by Olly (0-20), new player Kim (0-43), Arif (0-35), and late fill-in, opposition under-11 Will Craggs (0-5). Highlights from the rest of the 1st innings included Kim falling in a ditch and also managing to get himself tangled in the boundary net, twice… Keith appearing to forget opposition nos. 5 and 6 were left handers and bowling beautifully down the leg side; and aforementioned opposition junior Will going for a paddle to retrieve the ball from the bordering brook, proving himself to have more mettle than the rest of the Corinthians side combined.

After tea, Olly (9) and David (25) began the chase, setting off at a pace befitting the mammoth task ahead, before opposition opener Charlie Robertson broke through, with Olly edging it onto his own stumps. Theo then took to the field, establishing a modest partnership with David, taking WCCC to 46-2, also falling foul of Mr Robertson. Shortly following this David edged it on to slip off the bowling of Josh Burt, this preceded a combination of batsmen who apparently wanted to get to the pub quicker. Ewan (4) and Ed (0) lasted 2 balls each, giving Burt 3 wickets in an over. Kim and Keith both made 6, the latter falling to a miracle catch by Burt.

While Keith struggled to get to grips with the scoreboard, eventually unearthing that 2 is, indeed, between 1 and 3; and Cotter Jr. discovered at the age of 5 months that life as a Corinthian can be tough. Brian (12, off 48…) and Geoff (13) blocked their way to 91-8, their example informing Arif (0* off 22) and Will (1* off 6, seeing off the last over) that the draw was, most definitely, on.
