An Artic wind greeted Corinthians 1st XI for their first league game of the season. After winning the toss and putting Raynes Park former Pupils (RPFP) into bat, it looked as if the fielders’ hands needed a few overs to thaw out as John Pinkos created a handful of catching opportunities for his teammates from his opening overs that ended up on the floor. Thankfully we eventually got the hang of it and were able to take our catches off of John (8-3-15) and his opening bowling partner Nasrullah (8-2-21) who both bowled excellent opening spells.
Nas was followed by Matt (5-3-24) who got some real bounce from the wicket and caused problems for the batsmen trying to play him on the back foot. After bowling his allotment straight through John was replaced with Aman, who got some swing and picked up a wicket from his 5 overs for 15 – with batsmen really struggling to score anything off of the bat.
The highlight of the day was undoubtably ‘bullet arm’ Bhav’s direct hit runout throw all the way from the deep point boundary! Nas came back in to the attack to finish off the RPFP innings in the 26th over with a comprehensive clean bowled final wicket – leaving them all out for 82.
Although the sun poked its head out every now and again, the wind and cold remained, and both innings featured a rain delay for a short while, and contemplations about how practical it would be to source pocket-based hand-warmers!
RPFP’s opening bowlers didn’t give too much away and picked up the wicket of Vikram for 2. However the target of 83 never looked like it would be enough, with Chris (53*) and Ahmed (23*) forming a formidable partnership and saw Corinthians through to the total in 16 overs, featuring some lovely drives to all parts of the ground.
So a great start to the season for the 1st XI, no major injuries and a comprehensive win. We’ll work on the catching for next week!
