Wimbledon Corinthians – How it all began…

Wimbledon Corinthians Cricket Club continues to develop steadily with the vigour and ambition that has taken it from the humble beginning of a ‘wandering’ side to the stability of an enlarged outfit, anchored by four vibrant, competitive teams.

The club originally started life as a third team within Morden Cricket Club, playing all of its matches away from home. The side had a core set of fixtures set up with a number of local clubs in Surrey. However most Morden Third Team players kept being drafted into the 2nd team and this regularly left the 3rd team with a depleted squad or even worse, being unable to fulfil their pre-arranged fixtures.

Despite many attempts to rectify the situation, the third team felt that the position was unworkable and in early 1997 decided to sever its ties with the parent club.

Graham Pinkney - One of the founding fathers of the clubUnder the enthusiastic guidance of Club Founder Graham Pinkney, the new independent outfit was very quickly running its own affairs, playing matches regularly throughout the season. As a temporary measure, the team continued using the “Morden 3rd Team” name throughout the 1997 season. However in 1998, the team officially started playing under the registered identity of Morden Corinthians, a developing cricket club in its own right, which became affiliated to the Club Cricket Conference.

Morden Corinthians Cricket Club began to grow at a steady rate and this growth was boosted – albeit at the expense of Robin Hood Cricket Club, another local outfit which folded in 2000.

The incoming players from Robin Hood enabled MCCC to operate both a Sunday and Saturday side for the first time.

After 10 successful years as Morden Corinthians, its members voted at the Club’s Annual General Meeting in 2008 to change the name to Wimbledon Corinthians Cricket Club. This was done primarily to increase the club’s visibility and to reflect more closely the location of its home ground in the London Borough of Merton – Wimbledon is already famous for tennis and football and we believe it is only a matter of time before it is famous for its cricket too!

As a Club, Corinthians has steadily built a growing reputation for sportsmanship. At the end of the season, the Club hosts its AGM, followed later in the year by its awards presentation and dinner for players and their guests.
