2nd XI win comfortably against Streatham and Marlborough

WCCC 2nd XI vs Streatham and Marlborough Friendly/7th XI
Corinthians win by 87 runs

Warm and hazy conditions greeted the two teams at Raynes Park with a promise of a lovely day’s cricket evident for all. After chasing Wimbledon 5th XI, their oppo and a couple of other teams off Pitch 1, we staked a claim and got our match underway. Skipper for the day Theo had his carefully formed plans to bowl first scuppered by losing the toss and being inserted.

Corinthians opening pair of Ivan and Sumit strode to the crease and started confidently with a nicely paced partnership of 59 in about 15 overs. This ended with Sumit being given out LBW for 25. Ivan and David C kept the score ticking to 77 when Dave nicked off to the keeper for 2 and Druva was bowled 1st ball via an inside edge for 0 (78-3). At this point (drinks as it happened) it seemed as if the almost traditional Corinthians Collapse was on but with 1st team imports Gopa and Sunny at 5 and 6 surely we would avoid it this time… Gopa started in aggressive style scoring at a strike rate approaching 200, Ivan on the other hand was playing an excellent anchor role and had nudged his way to a club high score of 23 off 73 balls when he became fourth man out, run out. (111-4 Nelson strikes). Sunny and Gopa then got stuck in with balls flying everwhere until Gopa fell victim to Carey LBW 46 off 34 balls (138-5). This started a series of partnerships that involved the Corinthians lower order hanging around briefly while Sunny scored the runs. 145-6 (Pilgrim 2) became 180-7 (Lalit 3), 212-8 (Steve 5) and 217-9 (Theo 1) with Corinthians closing on 220-9 off their 40 overs (Sunny 72(39) and Geoff 2(3) not out at the end).

Thanks to Steve and Keith who had teas all set up and ready to go when the innings ended.

The hunt for wickets started with Steve and Geoff, Steve was his miserly best for 8 overs (8-5-9-1), Geoff rather more erratic (6-0-26-2) however he did produce two absolute pearlers to clean bowl the number 1 and 3 for ducks. This left Streatham 32-3 with opener Andy Zaltzman unbeaten on 15. He was then joined by Hyam and cut loose a bit with a series of drives down the ground, this pair put on 61 but some decent Corinthians bowling and fielding meant they were never up with the run rate. Having reached 93-3off about 25 overs the required rate was now up to almost 9 and this pressure caused Zaltzman to hole out at mid on c. Ivan b. Keith for a solid 45 of 62 balls (93-4). From here on it was a struggle for the Streatham batsmen who could not stick around long enough to get in and play their shots. Wickets fell at regular intervals 95-5, 109-6, 118-7, 124-8, 126-9 and 133 all out. Every bowler had success with KP and GB taking 2 each, Lalit his first club wicket and Steve, Druva, Theo and Gopa all chipping in with a wicket with a Gopa run out making the 10 wickets to fall.

Well played all, especially another excellent effort in the field that closed the game out.
